Meet Bear the Brindle Mastiff - NEEDS HOME NOW

URGENT! PLEASE CALL BROOKLYN ACC ASAP IF YOU CAN HELP!

Another great dog with a rather complicated history ... seems when humans have problems in their lives, the dogs suffer, and Bear is no exception. A beautiful brindle Mastiff, this big guy has been through a lot of changes, going from adopter to foster to stray. He's wound back at the shelter, but his demeanor hasn't wavered, he's still calm, sweet and very good-natured.

At 7 years old, he's mature and mellow, and it's about time this gentle giant finds a home where he can live out the rest of his life in safety and comfort. He weighs about 90 lbs., maybe a little on the chunky side, but he looks healthy; and who doesn't have a few extra pounds these days? Bear deserves to go onto the next leg of his journey with someone who will truly care about him this time.

He was wonderful during his walk and his photo shoot, and he loves to be petted by everybody. Plus he's already neutered, so he can walk out the door of the shelter as soon as his adoption papers are signed!!

Manhattan Compassion Program at AC&C

Please see if you can find time to volunteer - Only 3 hours per week!

Animal Care and Control of Manhattan is in desperate need of dog lovers (you MUST be a pittie fan) who have a minimum of 3 evening hours a week to devote to making sure the dogs who are most at risk to be euthanized the next morning get an evening walk, food, a treat, and a comforter before they go to sleep.

We have volunteers and staff to care for these wonderful animals before 6pm, but are extremely short handed after that. As a result, lots of dogs are forced to 'hold it in' until the next morning. In addition, we feel these dogs deserve encouragement, affection, and a chance to breathe in some night air. Life in a cage is not fun by any means, and the animals really do depend entirely on the kindness of people to alleviate their suffering. YOU can help!

You need to be as reliable as the sun (SHOW UP when you say you will), a hard worker, and able to deal with grief--but you'll meet new friends, interact with amazing dogs, and get 80 tons of good karma points in return. It's truly a life changing experience!

Respond to compassionacc@gmail.com
to be trained, encouraged, and mentored
in lovely, sunny East Harlem!!

Many thanks in advance,

Laurie Daniels

Meet Maddox the Inspirational Mini Pitti

Poor Maddox was used as a bait dog, and still has the ability to LOVE other dogs, even the mean ones!! He seems to have a huge appreciation for life, due to his horrible beginning. He was covered in scabs, cuts, and wounds, but is now healing nicely!

Here is the story, from the woman who found Maddox.
"On the way home one day in July, my husband and I stopped to help a bloody, emaciated, small, delirious male pitbull mix who was wobbling down the middle of a busy road. Cars and trucks were whizzing by. Two other cars stopped when we did, but they both wanted me to call Animal Services to come and get him right away. We all know what that means... A man on a a bicycle told us that he'd been wandering in that area for 2 days -- bleeding -- and no one stopped to help him. :-( We took the dog to an Emergency Vet and had his wounds cleaned and bandaged, and he was given pain medication for days, put on antibiotics, tested for heartworms, and boarded there for a few days while he healed. (He had no microchip, collar, or tags, by the way.) He interacted with so many people and dogs at the emergency vet, and it was great for his personality. (He'd started out as a cowering and fearful little guy -- and now, he's a gentle, smiling, tail-wagging machine who loves everyone and all dogs! He loves to do the "downward dog" pose! Don't know about cats or birds or horses...) The emergency vets agreed that he'd been used as a bait dog. He had so many bites and punctures, and the wound on his leg was SO deep. He was very very gentle, and even when they gave him shots for pain, etc., he didn't react. He seemed to be giving up. We visited him every day at the vet, and his transformation was amazing. They had him on "weight gain" food (disgusting beige paste-like food) that would help him recuperate, and he loved it. (That's how we calmed him down when we caught him on the street -- bottled water and canned food!)

Once he was stable at the emergency vet, we moved him to our vet's office (less expensive), where he's now been boarded and recuperating for 3 weeks. His largest wound (the huge chunk taken out of one leg) healed enough "from the inside out" to be stitched up, so our vet did that when he was neutering him. He also gave him all of his vaccinations and treated all of his other wounds (punctures in lips, ears, eyes, etc -- scabs everywhere). Maddox is between 1 and 2 years old. He weighs just 36 lbs. He's up-to-date on all of his shots, has been neutered, is negative for heartworms, and has a brand new leash and collar He has natural ears and a long tail, and he's a medium-sized brown and white dog. He sits OCCASIONALLY, and he is learning. He is SO gentle when he eats. On the first day that he was at the vet, I decided to try a "trust exercise" with him, and I put warm roast beef hanging out of my mouth, and he GENTLY took it. There was not a mean bone in his little body - from day 1. Our vet told us that he has a Grade 4 heart murmur, so "when he starts coughing" (someday), he'll need to be put on daily medication. The heart condition may shorten his life (to 7 or 8 years old). We HAVE found that he enjoys being inside (air-conditioning), and likes to go for short walks and come back in and play. I don't know if the air-conditioning is important for his heart murmur. (We had a chihuahua with a Grade 4 heart murmur who lived to 23 years old - but he lived inside. Living inside would surely be best for Maddox.) We visit him at the vet every day and take him for walks, take him for rides (he's great in the car), and bring him to our house, but pitbulls are illegal here, so we need to get him out of Miami-Dade County. (People see him and are leery -- yet he's the gentlest, most loving little guy in the world!) It's the "pitbull stigma." We are concerned that someone will call Animal Control on him, even though he's the sweetest, happiest, smallest, gentlest little guy who loves all people AND DOGS, despite what was done to him! (He came face-to-face with a GIANT, aggressive American Bulldog at the vet the other day, and he just wanted to play!! The Bulldog wanted no part of it - but Maddox was ignorantly playful!)"

Maddox is absolutely adorable, and just so so so sweet!! He is such a calm boy, that does need a boost of confidence but would LOVE to come home with you! He is SOO tiny!! He looks like he weighs about 30 lbs! Hes petite and adorable!! Maddox has the CUTEST little wrinkles on the side of his mouth, you just wanna squish and kiss his face!

They love each other deeply.

Meet Lara the Sweet Pit Mix

Lara, a 3 yr old pit bull .. good with kids, good with cats & other dogs, she is a love! She will be delivered to her rescue on Tuesday & is ready for her forever home .. anyone interested, email dabandolo@aol.com

Meet Larry the Big Lovable Mix

Larry was found wandering around the city streets, looking for his master perhaps, trying to find his way home. Instead, he found his way to an overcrowded city shelter, where his life was in danger. A volunteer noticed this sweet handsome chap and asked our rescue to help find him the home he deserves.

Larry is very sweet, very smart and lovable. What kind of dog is he? Some have called him English Coonhound Mix, some have said Pointer Mix. He may have some Bull Dog in him somewhere. Whatever the mix, it's a winning combo!! This 60 pound boy is a LOOKER with his big wide eyes, and long tall legs. He is good with submissive dogs, great with CATS! and loves everyone. He is a quick learner, loves to play, run and be active. He would perfect for anyone looking for a jogging companion, a hiking buddy, or someone to play ball with in their backyard.

Larry has all his shots, is neutered and micro chipped too. To meet this awesome dog, please call 917 689 8414, and thanks for caring about Larry!

Meet Taylor the Handsome Hound Mix

Taylor is a handsome, sweet guy who weighs about 50 pounds and is about 9-10 months old. He was rescued by a good samaritan down in North Carolina who saved him from almost being shot by a preacher. A preacher! Apparently he did not like that Taylor was hanging around his church, probably just looking for a kind pat and a good meal.

Taylor loves other dogs and seems just fine with cats. He most likely has spent much of his life outdoors and has never been walked on a leash, so... he needs training (housetraining and leash training). The good news is that Taylor adores people and is a very happy, jolly boy who will be a loving companion to anyone who treats him with kindness. The couch is proving to be his favorite place to spend time and he would be a great family dog. He also LOVES to wrestle and play with other dogs.

He's VERY handsome (he has long legs and "puppy-dog" eyes), fun, goofy, and very affectionate. He is a healthy boy, up-to-date with his vaccinations, heartworm negative, and will be neutered and microchipped soon.

Meet Cyrus the Ridgeback Mix

CYRUS was picked up at a city shelter just minutes before he was about to be put down for lack of space. He is very happy to be alive and we are glad that he is too! This 10 month old Ridgeback-American Staffordshire- Pit Bull Mix is one incredible boy!

Here is what his foster mom had to say about him:
"His energy level would give the energizer bunny a run for his money, but he is a GOOD dog. He's learned to sit before EVERYTHING. Before he gets a treat, before he eats, before he goes out.... he's learning quickly and is very smart. He's such a snuggle bunny when he's sleepy, and loves to cuddle at night. ... really would do better with a fenced yard to run in for long periods. I've introduced him to other dogs and he loves them, but just plays very rough. - he'd be great at agility! This boy loves to be ACTIVE! Cyrus is a great watch dog and he loves being outside. Likes playing fetch. Loves toys, loves chews, bones, ropes... and will run for hours. If someone needed a jogging partner, this would be ideal. He will let you touch him anywhere and I take things out of his mouth on a constant basis. LOL"

Cyrus would do best as an only-dog or with one other large dog who is docile, and would be fine with older kids. This willing student would be your best dog to train, as he is eager to learn, follows direction and is loyal and obedient. Cyrus has all his shots, is neutered, micro chipped and fully vetted.

The only thing missing is his forever home....if you think it might be yours, please call 917 689 4814 to meet our boy Cyrus.

Meet Daisy & Dillon, the Puggle Pair

Daisy & Dillon are wonderful, loving, affectionate dogs who are well trained and just want to have fun and be loved. They have great dispositions and personalities and are so much fun to have around. The kids love them!!!

They have been in foster care for about 2 months and have been thoroughly evaluated. They are very well trained and well behaved. They prefer to eliminate on grass . We recommend their adoptive family gate them when they are left alone because they are still puppies & can be mischievous and chew on things. They are perfect when someone is at home and do not need to be gated.

D&D's pug sides come out as they love to be petted, cuddled and cuddle up together. There is nothing better than being on someone's lap. They are very bonded and are together constantly. (Dillon is the dominant of the pair.)

The "uggle side" comes out when they are in the yard b/c you can see that they love to dig holes outside! They play well together, with the kids and adore their beagle foster brother. They love to chase balls and wrestle with eachother.

This loving pair get along with everyone and every furry friend they meet....people & children of all ages!

Meet Shamus the Abandoned Pit

Hi, I'm Shamus. One cold, rainy night I was looking for my family in the road. There were so many cars driving by so fast, honking their horns and yelling at me. All I wanted to do was find my family, but none of the cars stopped. Finally, after standing in the cold and rain for hours, someone called out to me. He sounded nice, was it dad?? So I ran over to him. It wasn't my dad, but the nice man told me to hop in his truck where it was dry and warm. He took me home and has been caring for me there for a while. He tells me he loves me, but can not keep me due to the bans on me breed. I don't really understand, but I hope I will find a forever home soon.

Shamus is such a big beautiful boy!! He is such a lover and is very well behaved, he is young (about 2 years) and knows a couple of basic commands like "sit". He loves to give lots of kisses!! He has the most squishable, lovable, mushable, kissable face!! Shamus has truly stolen my heart, and I can not put into words how much I truly love this dog. He desperately needs a forever or foster home!!

If you are interested in this dog, please contact Heidi at Helnc5313@aol.com. Adoption application, references, and home visit required.Adoption fee is $200.
